Project Description

The South African National Roads Agency completed an ITS deployment, using the Parsons Intelligent Control Suite on the Ben Schoeman Highway which links the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria. This section of road is the busiest road in Africa. Intelligent Incident is used to manage all the traffic incidents on the roadways. Additionally, Intelligent Maintenance is utilized to control all the maintenance activity on the roadways automatically producing job cards for all maintenance jobs.

Delcan Technologies provided the software and integration services. This project connected to and controls all the ITS field devices including, DMS Signs, Ramp Meters, Lane Control Signs, Vehicle Detector Stations, Remote Traffic Microwave Sensors (RTMS) and Warning Beacon. The system also provides Travel Time Prediction and Incident Detection. The system reportes all alarms from field devices as well as alarms for the Digital Video Recorder (DVR).

This project includes integration to the existing MICROS loop counting stations through a NTCIP proxy server. All information from the Traffic Management Software is interfaced into the public facing “i-traffic” website.
